Sonam Gyatso accepted an invitation to meet with AltynKhan of the Tumet in Qinghai in 1578. At the meeting, Sonam Gyatso received the title of "Dalai" a Mongol word meaning "Ocean" and implying "Ocean of Wisdom." Sonam Gyatso then became the third Dalai lama.

Handmade by artisans and skilled craftsmen from the coastal region of China; therefore, variations in finishes, castings, symmetry, and detailing are anticipated and expected. Cast in resin and hand-finished.
